A new religion

Is it possible for a new full-blown religion to appear these days? Not a sect or cult run by charismatic crackpots, not a commercial enterprise like Scientology, but a religion to rival Christianity/Islam/Hinduism/etc, (for the most part) run by true believers?

Crackpot predictions

- A perpetual motion machine of the second kind can be built
- Faster-than-light communication is possible
- Strong AI can and will be created. 21st century? Really wanna see it happen in my lifetime, but seeing how so many predictions in the middle of 20th century proved to be vastly optimistic, it could take another couple of centuries.

Some random ideas (haven't given much thought to it really):
- thermonuclear energy is finally harnessed (21st century)
- practical electric cars are built and largely replace ICE cars (20-50 years)
- an operating system built on open standards gets a major share of the desktop market

FIRST POST!! LOLZ

How much would you pay for a one-way ticket to Mars? I would give away all I have (which is basically nothing atm :/), and wouldn't even bother looking at the small print. The only thing I would ask for is to have at least around 90% estimated chance to get there alive, and perhaps 50% to make it through the first few years there.
I wouldn't give a flying fuck if I ever get to come back, although the chances of that happening would probably steadily improve with time. Or maybe not, because the inevitable physiological changes due to living in 0.376 g could well be permanent. That's okay. All I care is that my condition is enough for sustained living there, and I'm pretty sure a human body's auto-adjustment mechanisms would readily provide just that.
